Why Is My Check Engine Light On?

On April 29th, 2014, posted in: Car Wash by

The Check Engine Light strikes fear into the hearts of some Glendale drivers and is totally ignored by just as many. Just what it means is a mystery to most of us in AZ.

First, if your sedan check engine light is flashing, that means that something is wrong that could cause severe damage to the catalytic converter or other components. Get that taken care of right away. If your check engine light is flashing, you shouldn’t drive at Glendale highway speeds, tow or haul heavy loads. Take it easy all the way to BJS AUTO SPA in Glendale.

If the light is glowing steadily, you should keep an eye on it for a day or two. If the light doesn’t go off, schedule an appointment with your Glendale service advisor to get it checked out.

Some more information from BJS AUTO SPA on how the Check Engine Light works may be informative. Most of your sedan engine functions are controlled by a computer, not surprisingly, called an engine control computer. The computer is able to adjust many engine parameters for environmental conditions, engine condition and even the way you drive in Glendale.

In order to make these adjustments, the sedan computer relies on a network of sensors to provide data. The computer knows the proper operating range for each sensor. When a sensor reading is out of range the computer runs some tests and may turn on the Check Engine Light.

The sedan computer will also try to make adjustments to compensate for some readings. If it can do so, it’ll then turn off the Check Engine Light.

If the problem can’t be resolved then the light will remain on and you should get your sedan looked at at BJS AUTO SPA. Your friendly service technician will plug a scanner into the on-board diagnostic port and read the trouble code stored in the computer. The trouble code will give your BJS AUTO SPA technician a starting place as he diagnoses the cause of the problem.

FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING

Fuel Injector Cleaning At BJS AUTO SPA In Glendale

Fuel Injector Cleaning Phoenix
Something we hear quite frequently from Glendale auto owners is that their gas mileage is down and their sedan just doesn’t have the pep it used to. When that happens, one of the things we look for is clogged fuel injectors.

The engine management computer tells your fuel injectors exactly when to squirt fuel into your sedan engine. It is vital that clean fuel injectors spray the right amount of gasoline or diesel fuel in a nice, specific spray pattern. A dirty injector can’t spray enough fuel and it comes out in an uneven, weak pattern.

When Phoenix motorists’ fuel injectors are dirty or clogged, the fuel just can’t burn as efficiently, which causes fuel economy to drop. And your sedan engine can’t make as much power.

Fuel injectors just get dirty over time. Gas and diesel fuel cause varnish and gum to build up in your fuel injectors, especially if you buy bargain gas in Phoenix. If your fuel injectors get too dirty, they can be damaged and need to be replaced – which can be pretty expensive.

The good news is that a professional fuel injector cleaning at BJS AUTO SPA in Glendale can get all that gunk out of your injectors. They’ll be able to spray the right amount of fuel, at exactly the right time, and in the right spray pattern. Your fuel economy will be restored in Phoenix along with your sedan engine performance. Fuel injectors are cleaned as part of a comprehensive fuel system cleaning that includes the induction system (throttle plates, intake manifold, idle air by-pass passages and, if applicable, the mass airflow sensor).

So ask your friendly service professional about fuel injector cleaning in Glendale at BJS AUTO SPA to get your engine running like new.

Tires!

On November 5th, 2013, posted in: Car Wash by

BJS AUTO SPA Tech Question:
My name is Dan. My sedan tires wore out early and I had to replace them. What can I do to make my tires last longer?

BJS AUTO SPA Answer:
Dan’s problem – premature tire wear – is very common for Glendale car owners. Here are several ways to lengthen the life of your tires:

First, tires lose air pressure over time, so check them at least once a month and fill them up as necessary. A sticker on the driver’s side door jamb has the recommended pressure.

Tire rotation is also vital for AZ auto owners. Your front tires take the brunt of stopping and steering forces so they wear faster than the rear tires. They should be rotated regularly so that all four tires wear more evenly. Talk to us at BJS AUTO SPA in Glendale.

Out of balance wheels can also cause a tire to wear too fast. Glendale drivers who feel a vibration in their seat or steering wheel may have a wheel out of balance.

Finally, bad wheel alignment and worn or damaged suspension can chew through a tire very quickly. Ask your friendly BJS AUTO SPA service specialist to have your tires inspected for signs of premature wear. Your technician will be able to pinpoint the cause and get it taken care of.

Why Is My Check Engine Light On?

On September 24th, 2013, posted in: Car Wash by

The Check Engine Light strikes fear into the hearts of some in Phoenix and is totally ignored by just as many. Just what it means is a mystery to most Phoenix drivers.

Let’s get the urgency issues out of the way first. If your sedan’s check engine light is flashing, that means that something is wrong that could cause severe engine damage. Naturally, Phoenix drivers should get that taken care of right away at BJS AUTO SPA.

If your check engine light is flashing, you shouldn’t drive at Phoenix highway speeds, tow or haul heavy loads. Take it easy all the way to your Phoenix service center.

If the light is glowing steadily, Phoenix auto owners should keep an eye on it for a day or two. If the light doesn’t go off, schedule an appointment with BJS AUTO SPA to get it checked out.

An explanation on how the Check Engine Light works may be informative. Most of your sedan engine functions are controlled by a computer, not surprisingly, called an engine control computer. The computer is able to adjust many engine parameters for environmental conditions, engine condition and even the way you drive in Phoenix.

In order to make these adjustments, the computer relies on a network of sensors to provide data. The computer knows the proper operating range for each sensor. When a sensor reading is out of range the computer runs some tests and may turn on the Check Engine Light.

A simple example is a loose or missing gas cap. This may cause one of the sensors to read out of range. The sedan’s computer doesn’t know if it’s a serious condition that caused the reading or just a loose gas cap, so it stores a trouble code and turns on the Check Engine Light.

Now when you tighten up the gas cap the sensor readings will be in the correct range. The computer will keep checking on the report for a day or two. Since a bad reading didn’t come up again, it turns off the Check Engine Light. The computer will also try to make adjustments to compensate for some readings. If it can do so, it’ll then turn off the Check Engine Light. If the problem can’t be resolved then the light will remain on and you should get your sedan looked at at BJS AUTO SPA.

Your BJS AUTO SPA technician will plug a scanner into the on-board diagnostic port and read the trouble code stored in the computer. The trouble code will give the BJS AUTO SPA technician a starting place as he diagnoses the cause of the problem.

Battery Maintenance

On September 24th, 2013, posted in: Car Wash by

In today’s BJS AUTO SPA auto care blog, we are focusing on battery maintenance. Eventually your car battery will fail and you will need to replace it. In fact, 70% don’t even make it four years. There are some things Glendale motorists can do, however, to make their battery last a little longer.

It’s all about the flow of electrical power. When you start your sedan, the battery uses power to get your engine cranking. As your engine runs, your alternator generates electricity to run all your electrical systems: like lights, a half dozen computers, anti-lock brake system, traction control, power windows, electronic fuel injectors, stability control, air conditioning, transmission servos – the list goes on. Any leftover electricity goes to recharge your sedan battery. Then you turn on your radio and seat heaters; maybe plug in your cell phone and computer; the kids watch a DVD and pretty soon there isn’t much extra electricity to go back into the battery.

Now, if you were on a long AZ road trip, no sweat – you’d have plenty of time to fully recharge your battery. But not if you’re making stops around Glendale. Every time you start your sedan engine, your battery takes that big hit again. Multiple starts – multiple hits. By the time you get home, you have less than a full charge.

When the battery is continuously in a discharged state, it loses its ability to fully recharge. This starts a downward spiral in your battery life. Now when your battery is on its way to getting this bad, your alternator is working overtime trying to keep it charged – which causes the alternator to wear out prematurely. A lot of experienced Glendale technicians suggest replacing your battery after five years, even though it hasn’t yet failed, as a maintenance item to extend alternator life.

Now, there is something you can do to help your battery last longer by hooking up a battery charger once a month in the summer and every three months in winter. This will ensure your sedan battery routinely has a full charge. You can do this less often in the winter because the electrochemical process slows down when it’s colder and less damage is done when your battery is low. Computerized battery chargers are real easy to use because they monitor and control the charging rate to keep the battery from overheating while it’s charging.

We recommend that you ask your friendly BJS AUTO SPA advisor to test your battery so you know how much life is left. If it’s good but needs a maintenance service, he’ll have it cleaned up and make sure the connections and cables are good. If it’s looking like you ought to replace it, he’ll help you with a battery that’s right for your sedan and driving needs.
